Legal bid possible to move sex workers „„ By Andrew King ANGRY ST Albans residents have called in a legal expert to try and rid their street of sex workers. Solicitor and Labour candidate for Christchurch Central Duncan Webb (right) will look to see if the Public Places Bylaw can be used to move sex workers from the northern end of Manchester St. The bylaw is the same one used by police to crack down on car window washers working on city intersections. It came after complaints from motorists they were being harassed by the window washers. The potential legal action
comes as police prepare to meet with the city council over the issue in late November. Acting Superintendent Peter Cooper said the discussion between city council, police and the residents is important to find a suitable solution. Resident Matt Bonis said people who live on Manchester St believed the city council had not done enough to deter sex workers form the area. “The residents are furious this has been going on for five years and the city council and police haven’t done anything about it because it is seen as a little bit difficult,â€? he said. •Turn to page 5
STYLE WITH A STATEMENT
Isaac Shin (umbrella) and Jayden Palmer (money man) show off the costumes they made as part of Fendalton Open-air School’s wearable arts show held last week. The show involved multi-media, lighting, music and choreography to express how ‘challenge creates opportunity.’ Pupils worked together in small teams to develop their ideas and methods of construction. This year there were five different categories to create for – Take a Stand, New Zealand Inspired, Time Warp, Mama Said and the ever popular Illuminate. The focus was on making a statement not on competition.

CITY COUNCILLOR Mike Davidson has shunned his car since being elected and taken up pedal power to be “part of the solution” to traffic congestion in Papanui. In his first opinion piece for the Nor’West News, Cr Davidson says the Northern Corridor Project will not be enough to reduce congestion (page 4). He brings up the topic of rail as a possible solution. If you have thoughts on the issue send in a letter to the editor to shelley. robinson@starmedia.kiwi and it could be published. St Andrew’s College student Finn van Dorsser is quite a wordsmith. His poem, An Orison to the Future Comet, was selected as a top 15 winner in the Foyle young poets of the year award. It was selected from more than 10,000 entries across 76 countries. Well done Finn. Hei kona, Shelley Robinson

“I have had no formal training in art but have learned at the coal face doing markets and craft shows. I have been self employed practising my art since coming to NZ. Part of the pleasure for me putting this show together has been the enjoyments of seeing each piece take on its own story. The tales we are told when we are young help to shape our lives making us who we are. Legends and stories that extend into the roots of civilisation add to our values and traditions. Early mankind left rock drawings depicting how they lived and what they saw in their everyday lives, they would have made music and communicated with each other as we do today with story and song. We have become a bit more sophisticated since the advent of electronic communication. The ancient Egyptians used hieroglyphics to record their beginnings and have left a wealth of information about them. Some cultures have no written language, so song is the way in which they remember their stories and pass on their past to the next generation. I present in this show, a cacophony of untold stories and songs yet still to be sung.”

Cartwright tipped as new chair By Andrew King THE NEWLY re-elected David Cartwright is tipped to be the first chairman of the FendaltonWaimairi-Harewood Community Board when it meets today. Mr Cartwright was deputy chairman of the FendaltonWaimairi Community Board last term. The board had an unofficial meeting last Tuesday to feel each other out and talk about who should lead, with a strong indication Mr Cartwright is the man for the job. Mr Cartwright said that it was not “set in concrete” but if he is nominated today he will “grab it with both hands.” Sam MacDonald has also been tipped as possibly the next deputy alongside Bridget Williams. Mr MacDonald was elected in the Waimairi Ward and Ms Williams was elected in the Fendalton Ward. “We have some young great talents around the table. Sam has indicated that he is keen [as deputy]. If he says on Tuesday I’m into this then we will run with it,” Mr Cartwright said.
Young writer wins award OUT OF almost a million entries, a Rangi Ruru Girls’ School student has been awarded a gold medal in a writing competition. Mette van Pallandt won the year 10 section for New Zealand and the Pacific region in the New Zealand University of New South Wales International Competitions and Assessments for Schools. The competition attracted 980,000 entries with 514 students from Australia and 100 students from New Zealand and the Pacific region being awarded medals for their outstanding achievement. Mette’s winning submission recounts a rather frightening and unconventional game of hide and seek, one that may make readers think twice about climbing into a wardrobe ever again. She was presented with her gold medal at a school assembly recently as she will not be able to attend the national ceremony in December in Auckland. Students from each year with the top score in a subject are awarded a medal and a certificate. Rangi Ruru head of the English faculty, Erin Fitzpatrick, said it’s a noteworthy

Addressing congestion We will be asking the city councillors in the north-west area to give us their views on issues. This week newly-elected Papanui city councillor Mike Davidson talks about being elected and what he intends to do over the next three years Thank you to all those who voted in this year’s local body elections. I am honoured and excited to be elected as the councillor for the new Papanui Ward and look forward to representing the people of our ward and city over the next three years. As the councillor for Papanui I am also appointed to the Papanui-Innes Community Board so it will be great to continue the work that we started last term as the Shirley-Papanui Community Board. It was great to meet so many people during my election campaign who share my views and priorities including rates, water quality and traffic. Our area of the city experiences increasing congestion and although the Northern Corridor Project is about to commence I do not see this as the single answer to resolving this issue, not to mention the
effect this will have on Cranford St and surrounding areas. To reduce congestion we need to look at better transport options to offer people an alternative to their car. The existing rail corridor should be the focus for any conversation around future transport options and whether it be trains or buses using the corridor I believe that affordable public transport that is separate from private vehicles is necessary. Safe cycleways are also an important option especially for shorter distances and it is great to hear that construction of the Papanui Parallel is to begin shortly. Since being elected to the city council I have used my bike as my main form of transport and it’s great be part of the solution. Having met all my fellow councillors it is easy to see that we all want what is best for Christchurch and although some may have differing views of what this means I think we have the right team to create some really great outcomes for our city.
An unsuccessful candidate in the Waimairi Ward congratulates the new city councillor and community board members Anthony Rimell, of Sydenham – Congratulations to Raf Manji, my opponent in the recent local body elections, for securing the role of councillor for the Waimairi Ward. I wish him, and the two new community board members, Sam McDonald and Shirish Paranjape, all the best as they look to represent the hopes and needs of the people of the Waimairi Ward. In particular, I urge them to measure every proposal against the ‘three goods’ that I advocated in my campaign: is it good for our environment; is it good for our city; is it good for our Waimairi community? These measures will be especially important when it comes to the Hawthornden Rd Industrial Park Proposal (NWRA3), and to championing water quality in the north-west. Waimairi is a wonderful part of our city, and deserves the full energy of our elected representatives. I look forward to each of them bringing that. Again, congratulations to each on your win: We all look to you to do us proud.
POTENTIAL BOTTLE STORE: A new liquor store has been proposed for 2A Trafford St.
We asked readers last week if they thought Harewood needed another bottle store Bruce Lord, of Harewood – I live in the Nunweek Park area and I am definitely against the proposed liquor store on Trafford St. The one in Bishopdale Mall is fine for our area. Dave Browne, of Bishopdale – I too am fundamentally opposed to a liquor store opening in this area. It does not need another liquor store. How many is too many? Lucy Ritchie, of Harewood – As a long standing resident of Trafford St, I have no idea what the people are thinking of opening a bottle store in our residential area? Firstly,

we have enough places locally to buy wine, beer and spirits. I see no reason or good coming out of opening a bottle store here on our street. We are a residential area, with many young families in the neighbourhood and Nunweek Park and the new hockey complex – we would like to remain a pleasant, active sports and park area. We are plagued with things that are bad for us and we don’t need temptation on our doorstep. Wendy and Tony MacRae, of Harewood – Please pass on our strong opposition to the selling of more liquor in this area. There are at least three outlets in close proximity to Trafford St where this application has been made for.

News Wait over for postal services
By Andrew King NEW POSTAL services in the Bishopdale Village Mall have had a stalled start. The shop opened two days later than it planned after the building’s code compliance certificate was issued by the city council. Last week the Nor’West News saw several people walk up to use the new Paper Tree Bishopdale facilities but had to turn away because the shop was not open. A sign on the door read: Sorry we are unable to open until we receive council approval. However, two days later the doors opened after the city council fast tracked the certificate. Normally it takes 20 working days for the certificate to be issued, but the city council pushed it through to get the store open sooner. The shop opened at 4pm on Wednesday for 90 minutes. Canterbury Bookshop Ltd has taken over the running of the post shop, named the Paper Tree Bishopdale and will provide over the counter Kiwibank services as well as postal, courier, bill payment and post office box services, located at 31 Bishopdale Court.

Computers boost for families Legal bid By Andrew King FAMILIES UNABLE to afford computers could get a boost from a religious charity group and schools banding together. St Vincent de Paul has acquired a number of refurbished computers and want to pass them on to families in need of a “leg-up”. They will install the computers in homes free of charge with families from Redwood School, Northcote School and Casebrook Intermediate School set to benefit. Redwood School deputy principal Chris Els said it will change young kids’ lives and possibly their parents. “Now the plan is to get in touch with Spark and see if they will do a similar programme they provided Hornby High,” he said. In September, Hornby High School was part of a programme offering families with schoolaged children who can’t get access to the internet entry-level home broadband for a quarter of the normal price. Called Spark Jump, Mr Els is hopeful they will be able to get a similar deal. It is a no-contract plan with 30 gigabytes of data that comes with a free modem. He has a number of families

which have already put their hands up to get a computer installed in their home. “While it is in its infant stage it is a great idea,” he said. Northcote School principal
Neil Barker said it was a fantastic idea to benefit those around the area who need help. “This allows them to be part of a modern learning environment,” he said.
•From page 1 Residents met with city council chief executive Karleen Edwards and other council staff recently to discuss a way forward that would be beneficial to both the residents and sex workers. The residents engaged Mr Webb before the meeting with Dr Edwards to gauge what could be done. Dr Edwards told Nor’West News: “The council has agreed to initiate discussions with the police with a view to facilitate a meeting involving the residents, the council and police in order to continue the dialogue and look for solutions.” Mr Bonis it is was a positive step but didn’t want the process to drag on. “We don’t want this to be put in the too-hard basket. If we have to take it to court, we will,” he said. Mr Webb said it is his and the residents’ view that offering sexual services, standing on a street corner and responding to requests is clearly engaging in a commercial activity in a public place. “This is not about the fact that they are engaging in prostitution, it is about the wrong use of a piece of neighbourhood at the wrong time,” he said.

Daegan Wells
Exploring art history in the red Artist Daegan Wells recently received an award which will allow him to focus on his latest project. He spoke to Caitlin Miles about the city’s art history and his experience documenting the residential red zone
Congratulations on receiving the Olivia Spencer Bower Award – what was it like to win? Thank you, it was really exciting to be given it. It’s only offered every two years so I’m really excited to be selected. It’s really rare to have an opportunity to work on your practice full-time as an artist and especially in New Zealand. Is that what this award allows you to do? Yes, so over the next year I will be able to focus on this project without having to balance working and my art. It gives artists a chance to work solely on their project and provides financial assistance. Is it nice to know you don’t have to worry about your finance for the next year? Yes it is. It’s not often you get a chance to do this so it will take a bit of stress off trying to balance my project around working. Do you work full time? NEW LOCATION ADVERT.pdf 1 No, I work part time at a few places. I’m a tutor, I teach
photography and I also work at the Physics Room, which is an art gallery. What is your project on? I have chosen to focus on Christchurch’s art history between 1932 and 1939 because it coincided with a period of time of Olivia Spencer Bowers being in Christchurch. So I decided to focus on that time and investigate what was happening in Christchurch and the similarities in that time to now. Do you have any idea of where this project will take you, or is it still quite new? It’s still quite new. I think I’ve got a few starting points. I’ll go to the research library at the Christchurch Art Gallery, which will probably be my starting point. Also, talking to people that knew Olivia, knew of her or collected her works. So it will start like that but I’m not quite sure where it will go or how the work will look, but yeah, that’s 1/05/2014 11:51:35 a.m. my starting point. Your last project involved

spending time in the residential red zone, can you tell me a bit about that? I have a show at the moment at the Centre of Contemporary Art and that work is based around Bill Sutton and his abandoned studio and residence in the residential red zone. So my work has just been about going there and to other sites and putting together research and work about these sites. What was it like going into those people’s homes? It was really overwhelming, but I guess I had, for lack of a

How long did this project take? This was part of my masters’ research so it started in 2015. It’s been a year-long project. Can you tell me a bit about some of the other work you have done? So I had a show at Blue Oyster Gallery in Dunedin and the work was specifically about the Bill Sutton house. It incorporated some historical photographs, which the Christchurch Art Gallery lent to me, and some construction work as well.

better word, this good intention. I thought this wasn’t being documented and it was such a massive part of Christchurch because these people once occupied these spaces and I suppose I just wanted to engage with the site in a way that previously no one had been doing. So why did you choose to look at the residential red zone? I guess I felt that there was an urgency, things were changing so fast and there wasn’t much documentation around these sites so I guess, for me, urgency was the main kind of concern that I had.

zone before it’s gone for good Where did you study art? I did my masters in sculpture at Canterbury University. Why did you decide to do your masters in sculpture? I guess it’s sculpture in the loosest sense of the term. The kind of work that I make is more installations so my work incorporated photography and objects and other materials. It’s not set sculptures like everyone thinks, it’s very loose. Have you lived here your whole life? No I wasn’t born here, I moved to Christchurch from Nelson in 2008. I moved here partly for art school. But I don’t know really – I guess it’s a bigger city. I lived in the central city for a while and I’ve lived in Addington for about a year and a half. When you were growing up did you always want to pursue art? I guess it’s kind of like that classic story of when you’re leaving high school and you don’t quite know what to do. So I enjoyed making and thinking about art, so I guess for me, it just made sense and it turned out to be the right decision for me. You also co-founded some art spaces, can you tell me about them?
RED ZONE: Daegan Wells spent time documenting the residential red zone in 2015. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
HISTORY: This photo was taken at artist Bill Sutton’s abandoned red zone home.
My first space that I helped cofound was a space called Room 4, which was on St Asaph St. We decided to open that because we didn’t think there were many showing spaces, especially for emerging artists. I think that was the drive, focusing on emerging artists and not just from Christchurch. After that, we opened a gallery called Man Friday, which we had open for a year in 2015. What encouraged you to make these spaces?
It was really the lack of spaces for artists around the city and the need to provide for other artists and give them a chance. But also running an artist-run space is just a good way of encouraging community or building your own community, and working with other artists and getting more of the public aware of the artists around them. What have been some of the cool projects carried out in those spaces? There have been a few. When

Room 4 was running, there was a big factory behind us. I think they made garments, school uniforms I think. Each recycling day they would put out lots of boxes and because we didn’t have any shows planned, a group of us collected the boxes for about a month and we encouraged people to come in and we just kind of made some forts and it was just a really fun social thing to do. Who are some of your favourite artists?
That’s a tricky one to answer. I guess my peers and friends. But also the artists that I research, like Olivia Spencer Bower and Bill Sutton. Those people have the biggest influence on my work. How do they influence you? I guess I just respond to their art. Like mine is in no way similar to Bill Sutton’s, but it references him and his art and his career. That’s how I relate to artists I admire or enjoy. You have a lot on your plate, do you have much spare time? I guess my art is my spare time. So no, I don’t really have any. If I do have spare time, it’s pretty sparse and I haven’t had any for a while.

TOP DOG: Daniel Gilles and David Timbs show off their award-winning sausages.
Award-winning sausages IF YOU are looking to fire the barbecue up in the north-west this summer, a visit to Peter Timbs Meats could be an award winning choice. The butchery, with stores in both Bishopdale and Edgeware, snagged three gold medals and a bronze in this year’s Devro Great New Zealand Sausage competition. The store took home gold in the pre-cooked category with its pork, lemon and parsley, gourmet pork category with its pork, jalapeno and cheese and gourmet varietal category with its wild venison and black plum. It also received a bronze in the continental ready-to-eat category with its Portuguese entry. New World Bishopdale received a silver medal for its gourmet beef entry – creamy blue cheese and beef. Peter Timbs Meats owner David Timbs said it’s about
testing what works with the customers and seeing who comes back for what. “It is all about using the best ingredients to get the best product,” he said. On top of the ingredients, Chris Timbs, David’s cousin, spent time in the early 90s in Germany learning the art of sausage making. “He does all the weighing and seasoning when it comes to them so a lot of the credit should go to him,” David Timbs said. The award has really started to get people through the door. “We had one of our biggest Saturdays after the award was announced . . . Some old faces came in and some new ones, so that is great,” he said. The first Timbs Butchery opened in Oxford, England, in 1876 and was run by Peter’s great-great grandfather Samuel Timbs.

St Andrew’s poet top of the world ST ANDREW’S College can say they have one of the best young poets in the world. Finn van Dorsser had his poem, An Orison to the Future Comet, selected as a top 15 winner in the Foyle young poets of the year competition. It was selected from more than 10,000 entries across 76 countries. With more than 7600 young
people submitting poems this year worldwide, it is the largest competition of its kind. A school spokeswoman said it was “an outstanding student achievement.” “Last year he was one of 85 commended poets and he is understandably thrilled to be named in the top 15 winners this year,” she said. His prize is a week-long
OPEN: Koichi Hirama and Sandra Hastie cut the ribbon to Rangi Ruru’s new garden.
Rangi’s Japanese garden A GARDEN was officially opened at Rangi Ruru in front of students from its Japanese sister school, Yokohama Jogakuin. Yokohama Jogakuin principal Koichi Hirama and Rangi Ruru principal Sandra Hastie cut a ribbon in front of the garden. The Japanese-style garden recognises the close 23-year-old relationship between the two schools. Dr Hastie said the garden was
not only beautiful, but also a special place within the school. Yokohama Jogakuin has a garden on its grounds which is home to a yellow Rangi Ruru rose. Rangi Ruru gardener Dan Dennehy has overseen the development and planting of the garden, which includes japanese maple, japanese camellia and green mondo grass, as well as rocks from the Arawhata River near Haast.
COMPETING: Charlie Falconer made the most of Waimairi School’s senior athletics day at St James Park. Pupils competed in sprints, long distance, shot put, discus, high jump and long jump.
residential writing course at The Hurst Arvon Centre, United Kingdom, in 2017. The poem will be published in an anthology, which will be printed and available online at www.poetrysociety.org.uk/ poems/an-orison-to-a-futurecomet The award is an opportunity for any young poet aged 11 to 17 to get their writing career going.

More than 6000 people packed out the four children’s fishing lakes at The Groynes recently for the annual Take a Kid Fishing day. It was fitting the first fish caught was one of 14 trophy rainbow trout put in the lake on Thursday by North Canterbury Fish & Game. Four-year-old Violet Noone (below left) surprised her father Patrick by reeling in the first monster 2.9kg trout four minutes after the hooter had sounded. Violet showed it wasn’t a fluke, reeling in another 2.9kg trout within the hour.

SPORTS DEFENCE: Liam Wagteveld looks to block a shot.
EAGLE EYES: National trap shooting champions Jacob Warnock (left), Mason Gardener, Jimmy Field, Lyndon Arundell and Laurence Arundell.
Trap shooters right on target FIVE ST Andrew’s College students are national trap shooting champions after scoring the highest ever total in the competition’s history. The team of Jimmy Field, Mason Gardener, Jacob Warnock, Lyndon Arundell and Laurence Arundell won the national teams points score championship, with 295/300 points – a score that has never been achieved before. They were also second in the New Zealand secondary schools teams postal shoot. Eighteen St Andrew’s students altogether competed in the
secondary schools South Island and New Zealand clay target championships during the school holidays. All of the students did well and most scored personal bests. On top of being in a winning team, Lyndon won the New Zealand single barrel championships. His brother, Laurence, was second in the New Zealand points score championships, third in the national skeet championships and sixth in the South Island single rise trophy event.
Jimmy, Mason and Jacob were selected for the North Canterbury Fish and Game regional five person challenge team which came second. Jimmy and Mason were also selected to represent the South Island in the north versus south teams event. The south won the event. Kaitlin Watson, also of St Andrew’s, came fourth in the women’s single rise trophy event. A school spokeswoman said they were “incredibly proud” of the team and the individual shooters.
Christ the King Catholic School competed in the Canterbury water polo championships last weekend, winning the B grade trophy. They cruised through their first four games beating Heaton Intermediate, Casebrook Intermediate A and B and Christchurch South School. In the Casebrook B game, Christ the King managed to score 18 unanswered points. In the semi-finals, they beat Christchurch South 12-2 setting up a final against Heaton which they won 7-5. Sports co-ordinator Olivia Gill said the final was a nerve-racking game. “Heaton won the first two quarters. We managed to get one point ahead of them in the final quarter before Ryan and Jake [coaches] called time out with 30 seconds left, giving the team a rest. Max Coltman (scored) the last goal to end the game,” she said. Sam Rochford was awarded the most valuable player award for the B grade. Charlotte O’Neill, Sam Rochford, Nicola Crosbie, Molly Graham, Billie-Rose Dunlop, Liam Wagteveld, Maisy Perriam, James Methven, Logan McGreg, Max Coltman and Conor Crosbie made up the team, while Ryan Crosbie and Jake Rochford were the coaches. •More sport page 17

PLATFORM: (Left to right) – Jack Tyro and Johnny Andrews, of Point Surf Team Sumner, and Jack McKenzie, of Northside Waikuku, are promising young surfers who will be competing in the Canterbury Primary School Surfing Championships. PHOTO: STEVE TYRO
SPORTS
Chance for young surfers YOUNG STAR: Year 12 St Margaret’s student Emily Wium will be one of the youngest players at next month’s Junior World Cup in Chile. The 17-year-old is one of four Canterbury players named in the New Zealand under-21 team. The striker is joined by Catherine Tinning, Phoebe Steele and Kirsten Nation. Wium has represented Canterbury at under-18 and under-21 level this year, and also helped St Margaret’s to a third place finish at the Federation Cup. The Junior World Cup takes place in Santiago from November 24 to December 4. New Zealand will play Belgium, China and Spain in their pool. PHOTO: PLANET HOCKEY
TOP RIDERS: Rangi Ruru Girls’ School students Leah Zydenbos and Mollie Carruthers finished second in the North Island Secondary Schools Mounted Games competition at Kihikihi, near Te Awamutu. The girls were the only riders from the South Island competing as a pair.
By Hanna Reynolds SUMNER BEACH will host the Canterbury Primary School Surfing Champs for the first time on Sunday. Organiser Steve Tyro of Point Surf Team said the competition provided a good platform for young surfers. “We are expecting the best surfers in the area and those just interested in going in a surf contest for the experience.” The competition includes the current year 6 New Zealand champion, Campbell Heasley from Northside Boardriders in Waikuku. “(We’re) doing it to encourage kids to get into surfing whether it be for fun or for the competitive side, and to create some positive childhood memories,” Mr Tyro said. Surf club talent scouts from around New Zealand will be at
the competition to identify unaffiliated boardriders who could get a chance to compete in the New Zealand Primary School Championships in Gisborne next year. “Surfing is included in the upcoming Olympics and these are age groups that may have the chance to go,” Mr Tyro said. “They need a starting point and organised events like this are a good start.” Winners of each division will receive a trophy and finalists will receive medals. Sponsors from Sumner businesses are providing prizes. The event will be held between Head and Stoke Sts with the first heat starting at 7.15am. There are six divisions from year 5 to year 8, including an all ages longboard category. Entry forms for the competition are on the Point Surf Team Facebook page and close on Thursday.

Looking the part on race day
Annabelle Dick looks at race day trends AS THE New Zealand Cup and Show Week approaches, now is a good time to start planning that race day outfit. This is Canterbury’s biggest fashion event on the calendar so ladies start organising your look to get ahead of the queues. Here’s some things to consider when planning this year’s cup day look What to wear: Loose-fitting, slinky spaghettistrap dresses look good on almost any one. While simple, they scream chic. These dresses will be a common sight on the field this year but how you choose to accessorise it will make all the difference. Slip dresses are a good base so you can go all out and be creative in other ways. Pair with some lace-up heels and statement earrings for a sleek look. Full-length jumpsuits have made a hard and fast comeback and will undoubtedly be a strong contender for the outfit of choice. Opt for a jumpsuit in on-trend
HEADWEAR: Make sure you’re flaunting a headpiece at New Zealand Cup & Show Week like these fascinators made by Mary Outram. PHOTOS: MARCUS NEE/ MAKE UP: KM MAKEUP
hues, such as fiesta red or buttercup yellow, to really stand out. This year you can’t go wrong with hues of grey-blue, pastel pink, nude tones and bright red. Accessories: Personally, I like to keep my accessories very minimal. I’m not big on colour when it comes to accessorising because the chances of me wearing something brightly-coloured again is pretty slim. Instead, I keep it low-key with metallics,
nude tones and pastels. If you’re wearing florals, choose a subtle colour from your dress for your accessories. More subtle colours will bring your outfit together so think about muted tones like beige, grey, white or metallic. If you are wearing a block colour, you can create contrast with your shoes, bag and hat. Mustard yellow can look fab with white accessories and, if you’re scared of colour, a bright polish on your toes can really finish an outfit
nicely. A clutch is essential – you will need somewhere to put your lippy if your day involves hours of race-watching and drinking bubbles. And you’ll also need somewhere to put all those winning tickets. Shoes: Your bag and shoes don’t have to match, just think about how they look in a tone sense and dress accordingly. This year I’ve been really big on block heels.

They look slick and they’re oh-so comfy, which makes them a perfect cup day pick. Each year at the races, I see women struggle in sky-high stilettos and I feel second-hand embarrassment as I watch them on their tip-tops to avoid digging their heels into the muddy grass. Don’t be her this year. Alongside block heels, mules look good with almost anything and they are just as comfortable. But if you’re a bit sceptical about ditching the pumps, opt for lace-up heels. They’re a great statement if your dress is more nondescript and needs a pick-me-up. Headwear: The fascinator has become one of the hottest items worn by women to the races – mainly because it’s a smaller component of an outfit and it usually comes with a smaller price tag. Fascinators allow creativity and can add a lot of volume to a look. Whether you’re a first time attendee or a devoted race-goer, definitely make sure you’re rocking a head piece this year. Opt for a statement head piece like those seen on, and made by, Christchurch fashion queen Mary Outram. Check out maryoutram.com to buy one of her lush, hand-made crowns and fascinators.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Reclaim your identity When it comes to dentures, Christchurch people have access to world-leading techniques and oral aesthetics right on their doorstep. At his Montreal street studio Lovebite, internationally renowned dental technician Richard Greenlees creates beautiful bespoke dentures with small nuances in the fabrication, colour and shape, and even slight imperfections to create a uniquely individual smile. There is no need for dentures to look false. Richard takes a great deal of satisfaction in making bespoke dentures that look 100 per cent real and natural, personally guiding his patients through the transformation process to craft a smile that reflects their individuality and personality, and recreates their natural pre-denture smile. Not only do Lovebite teeth look real, the whole structure and shape of the patient’s face is transformed with Richard’s top-of-the-line dentures, something he calls his signature ‘denture
lift’. “With appropriate facial support, the facial tissues are brought back into the correct position, the lips are reformed, and beauty is restored,” he says. it is the interior architecture of a Lovebite denture that helps to create a more youthful appearance by recovering the face and skeletal shape that can be lost after years of wearing dentures. As the smile is transformed, so are the patient’s confidence, and the way they feel about themselves. Richard’s vast experience includes 15 years of running his own clinic in the prestigious harley st, London, where he treated people from all walks of life, from barrow boys to the rich and famous, politicians, actors and musicians. his techniques are recognised as
world-leading among his international peers, and he is regularly asked to lecture and run courses worldwide. Miles Cone (DMD, Ms, FACP, CDt), a prosthodontist from Oregon, UsA, said in November 2015: “Richard Greenlees’ craftsmanship is as stunning as it is unique. There is liberation in the calculated imperfection, indeed an asperity that reflects a purely human element.” in addition to dentures, Richard also carries out crown and bridge, veneer and implant work, in conjunction with like-minded dental surgeons who complement his creative and aesthetic work. “teeth are as different as fingerprints and vary greatly depending on a person’s age, sex and race. Dentures from Lovebite reflect this, and are as unique and individual as the people they are made for,” says Richard. There is nothing more satisfying for Richard than to see his patients leave the Lovebite studio with their selfconfidence and identity restored, as well as their smile.
